music therapy and me.
My name is Jessica and I’m a Board Certified Music Therapist. For me, this isn’t just something I stumbled upon, it’s personal to me - and I’m passionate about it. This is my story.
I have always had a passion for two things in life: music and kids with special needs. Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I sang in my church and high school choirs, and went on to study Music Education at Azusa Pacific University. I’ve not only experienced the power of music in my life, but I want to help others experience how music can help them learn or maintain skills, teach habits, anchor us in difficult times, and more.
But the real reason I’m a music therapist is because of my sister, Emily. Emily has an intellectual disability. She is one of the most beautiful people, and brings joy to everyone who meets her. I’ve watched up-close as she has struggled with basics like keeping/maintaining a schedule, communication, and learning new skills. As her sister, it’s been hard to watch her struggle with these things, but as a music therapist, I know I can use the power of music to empower people like my sister, to do things that are hard.
I believe that Music Therapy can make the world a better place for people like my sister - and for you.
WHY “GRACENOTES”?
I called my business “GraceNotes” for two reasons: In music, gracenotes are the little notes you play on your way to another note. It’s not the main note - it’s the enhancement. I think your life is the main thing - and music therapy can be the thing that enhances it. A way to help people move from one stage to another - a little flourish that enhances what is already there.
But GraceNotes is also named because of my faith and belief in God’s grace. No one is perfect - and I love bringing joy and hope to those in the special needs community that are often overlooked because of their disabilities. I believe there’s grace - extra grace, even - for them.
